Dyson DC31 Review & Giveaway (2/7)

I recently had the chance to review the Dyson DC31 handheld vacuum.  As you may have seen I had the chance to review an upright by Dyson and was very impressed.  Well their DC31 definitely lives up to the Dyson name.

With 3 kids I get a lot of little messes and don’t necessarily want to bring out the upright for them.  A chip crunched into the floor, a pile of glitter from our art fun, or sand in the shoe from playing outside.  After I have just put up the upright I would much rather not have to bring it back out (though I absolutely love it).

In comes the Dyson DC31.  It’s the perfect solution to clean up the messes when they happen and not having to bring out the upright or wait until you have enough of a mess to justify bringing out the upright.   Having never had a handheld vacuum I wasn’t sure what to expect.  First thing I noticed right out of the box was the sleek look with the traditional Dyson yellow.  I picked it up and noted that even with all the little funnels/suctions it was not heavy at all.

I plugged it in and let it charge the suggested 3.5 hours and went straight to my daughters room.  She is the one who likes art, anything glittery or paper that can be torn into small pieces is her forte so I knew her room would be a great place to start.  I went in and found the first mess and hit the power button and up came the mess in an instant.  The suction power on the handheld Dyson DC31 lives up to the Dyson reputation of strong suction power.  It picked up small pieces of “pet rock”, popcorn, paper, feathers and glitter.

Here are some other points about the Dyson DC31:

  • Included in the box: Batter, AC/DC Power Adapter, Battery Charger, Operating Manual, Quick Start Guide, Warranty Information, Registration Guide.
  • Accessories Included: Combination Accessory Tool (Debris Nozzle which converts to a Brush for dusting) and Crevice tool (perfect for base boards and corners)
  • The patented root cyclone technology Dyson is known for.
  • Charge Time : 3.5 hours
  • Suction Power: 10 minutes of 65 airwatt and 6 minutes of 35 airwatt power.
  • Bin Capacity: 0.09 Gallons.
  • Dimensions & Weight: 12.7 by 4.5 by 8.07 inches (HxWxD)/ 2.9 pounds

I loved that it was very lightweight and still powerful.  Now I know looking at the length you have to vacuum it doesn’t seem like very long and while I agree if you are going to use it until it runs out in one session, it’s not very long (10 minutes at most). However I only use it for spot messes and those are not going to need me to vacuum for 10 minutes straight so my charge lasts for days.  I have not charged it for 2 weeks (at the time of writing this review) and it is still suctioning strongly.

Overall I am very impressed with the power the small Dyson DC31 punches.  It’s definitely just what someone needs when they don’t want to lug out a full size vacuum to clean up a small mess.   The price tag for the DC31 is $219.99 and the DC31 Animal is $269.99.

From your review of the Dyson DC28 Animal VC, I learned that the vacuum cleaner is very easy to assemble (love that)!

I also learned that the Dyson DC28 Animal VC has fingertip controls that makes switching from bare floor to high carpet ‘as easy’ as the push of a finger!

And – once again, thanks for the chance to win!
