Quotable Sunday: Books

Submitted by Toni on January 30, 2010 – 10:01 pm9 Comments

Hi everyone! To all my readers thanks for stopping by this Sunday and to all my Quotable sunday Participants thank you for joining in. I love reading your quotes each week! I am an avid book lover so this week my quotes are all about books. Please if you are reading this week feel free to join in with us!

A good book on your shelf is a friend that turns its back on you and remains a friend. ~Author Unknown

A book is the only place in which you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore an explosive idea without fear it will go off in your face. It is one of the few havens remaining where a man’s mind can get both provocation and privacy. ~Edward P. Morgan

The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it. ~James Bryce

Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book. ~Author Unknown

A good book should leave you… slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it. ~William Styron, interview, Writers at Work, 1958

There is a great deal of difference between an eager man who wants to read a book and a tired man who wants a book to read. ~G.K. Chesterton

Many people, other than the authors, contribute to the making of a book, from the first person who had the bright idea of alphabetic writing through the inventor of movable type to the lumberjacks who felled the trees that were pulped for its printing. It is not customary to acknowledge the trees themselves, though their commitment is total. ~Forsyth and Rada, Machine Learning

If there’s a book you really want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison

I love to read, I love how when I get sucked into a story it helps me escape my life even if just for a few minutes each day. I get to experience the feelings of the people in the book. And in my opinion you can never start reading too young (or reading to your child if they can’t read yet). So go read a good book, it’s my homework for you!

Go ahead and link up your Quotable Sunday Post in the linky below.

Great subject this week Toni. I do not read enough, but since I joined a book club, I at least have a renewed interest in books. Unfortunately, joining the book club coincides with my new job, so I am having trouble making the time (for me it’s not about finding the time, I have the time, I just need to set priorities!) I thought I would be able to read each night on my 30 min break, but I don’t find our break room conducive to reading. I have about 150 pages of my book to finish before book club Wednesday night. We are reading Dive from Claussens Pier. Next up, The Pact by Jodi Picoult.

    My favorite!

I can never read too many books. My problem is that I don’t know when to stop reading and start living my own life. (Or cleaning my house and cooking dinner:)

Great quotes, Toni! Books are very important in our house, what with Hubby and I being English majors. I particularly liked the Morgan quote, which really sums up why books are so important.

One of my fave quotes about books is this one: “You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if you have lost a friend.” -Paul Sweeney
