I participated in a campaign on behalf of Influence Central for The Salvation Army. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

As Christmas approaches, my kids are super excited about the gifts they know are coming.  I love seeing that excitement in their eyes, I love seeing how thankful they are for what they have been given.  I love doing the giving to them and so many others during the holiday season.  I know times can be tough, I have been through those tough times, and giving brings me so much joy, which is something I want to instill in my children.

In fact, as a mom I am so proud, any time we pass the iconic Salvation Army red kettle, at least one of my kids wants to give.  Even when we aren’t near a red kettle they are in the giving spirit.  My daughter picked a child off the angel tree in her class and wanted to use her money to buy gifts for that child, because in her words, “I usually have a very good Christmas, I want others to have a good Christmas too“.  My oldest son knew a friend of the family was without work and gave some of his birthday money to him. My middle son, is always offering to treat others with the money he earns or receives.  My kids, like others out there, do think about just themselves some of the time, but then the moments they give so much of themselves or what they have makes me such a proud mom.

The Salvation Army’s always been such an inspiration to make sure we give back, they serve as a gentle reminder during the holidays. This is their 124th National Red Kettle Campaign, that’s a lot of giving back. Thanks to their #RedKettleReason initiative, they are encouraging people from all over to share their reasons for giving! It kicked off on Thanksgiving Day with a nationally televised LIVE performance by Pitbull during the Dallas Cowboys’ vs. The Philadelphia Eagles game! It also marks the 18th year of musical partnership between the Dallas Cowboys’ and The Salvation Army!

It’s so easy to give back and if you are wondering what exactly you will be giving to, check out how what was given in 2013 (in the U.S. alone) helped:

  • The Salvation Army served more than 58 million meals to the needy.
  • 204,000 people received rehabilitation services through donations to Family Stores.
  • Over 203,000 under privileged children attended day care and summer day camps.
  • The Army provided nearly 10 million nights of shelter.
  • 324,000 people received help during times of disaster.
  • More than 4 million families and children were served during the holidays.
  • More than 1.8 million people received help through senior, medical, and institutional services.

Don’t worry you aren’t too late, you can join in now or end-of-Year Giving: One-third of online donations occur during the last two days of the year. If you want to wait, you can donate up until the last day of 2014, and you will still receive proper documentation for tax purposes.

This time of the year, it’s so easy to get caught up in the ‘I want’, but don’t forget there are so many needy people and family out theres, that we need to remember to get caught up in the ‘I want to give’. The smile you won’t get to see, but you will know is there when that family opens a gift they would not have had or eat a meal they didn’t have the money for is worth every single cent you give. So get ready to share your #redkettlereason and let others know why it’s the season to give!

What’s your #RedKettleReason for giving back this year?
